Annual Chronicle 2021

Review of the past year

The New Year is a time for reflection. A time to sit down for a moment and stop, look back and try to pick up the pieces of the puzzle we got together from the year. We at Nordic Seafarm have had many exciting new projects and collaborations, launched our own products and welcomed new colleagues to the NSF team. What a year it has been!

The team is growing

Despite the impact of the pandemic, it has been a busy year on the seaweed front and for us at Nordic Seafarm it has been an eventful year to say the least. This autumn alone we have grown at a rapid pace and welcomed three new colleagues and there will be more to come. As we have had the space and need for more people in the team, we have therefore been able to focus more on cultivation, warehouse and logistics management and dedicate time to marketing. This is great, as it is a sign that we have room to grow and that Swedish seaweed has a place in the market. We're only in the early stages so far, but that makes it all so exciting.

Grown out of our premises

A big part of this autumn and winter has been moving from our old warehouse on Västbacken to new and more suitable premises in Dingle. There have been many truck turns to move everything and a lot of work demolishing and building new storage facilities but it will be so much better to have everything under one roof. This will also be able to be a gathering place where the whole NSF team can work together as we converge from different corners of the country.

Invested in ourselves

This autumn we managed to gather the whole team and almost the whole board for a teambuilding day in Gothenburg. The purpose of the day was to get to know each other and many of us met for the first time on this day. We would learn about company culture and why it is so important to have a team spirit where we share similar core values. Positive relationships create security which is a prerequisite for us to be ourselves. It's also key for performance to be the best. After all, if we're going to spend 1/3 of our lives at work, shouldn't we have a good time? We think that's a given and the day was very successful filled with laughter and long intense conversations, think we've got a really good team together!

Launched own products

In addition to expanding our cultivation and supplying seaweed to everything from celebrity chefs to food producers, last year we launched our very first own product - the Seaweed! After much ado about it, in time for Christmas we were able to share something that we had fallen in love with ourselves. It turned out really tasty and this is just the beginning, who knows what 2022 will bring?

Launch of My Seafarm

Another fun thing we've developed over the year is a service where restaurants can subscribe to seaweed lines in the sea. This way, they can guarantee that they will be able to enjoy the coming spring harvest and the first primer of the year - the sugar kelp!

EU project Ulva cultivation

A huge part of last year was that we had the great opportunity to take part in the EU's BlueInvest project. It's a project where the EU invests in helping us develop sustainable sea lettuce farms. This hasn't really been possible before as it has required them to be grown in tanks on land and that is limiting in many ways and not sustainable. We have then developed strong growing methods that allow the crops to withstand the harsh climate that is in the sea.

It's not easy to break new ground where there are rigid boundaries about how things should be. But rules are meant to be broken, or at least slowly pushed until they take new forms. We feel excited for new adventures and inspired to continue our fight for the blue revolution where seaweed is our hero!

Thanks to those of you who have followed and supported us during the year and welcome to you who are looking in for the first time.

With these lines we sum up 2021 and jump head first into 2022, let's go!
