3 reasons to eat more seaweed

1. Instead of fish oil jump straight to the source - algae

We are advised to eat fish and seafood to get Omega-3 and other nutrients. But many of us can't or won't eat fish because of the state of our fish stocks - we're well on the way to depleting the oceans of fish. But we need Omega-3s.

Two of the fatty acids in the Omega-3 family are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are found in fattier fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines. But the thing is, fish can't make these substances on their own - they get them from the algae they eat! So instead of depleting fish stocks - eat algae instead.Instead of getting it from seafood we can go straight to the source - seaweed!

2. Take sugar kelp instead of iodised salt

Seaweed contains high levels of iodine, so instead of seasoning with iodine-enriched salt - take a pinch of sugar kelp instead!Iodine is an extremely important mineral to get in order for thyroid hormones to work. Iodine is important for normal thyroid function, maintaining normal metabolism and cognitive ability.

3. Good for your stomach - seaweed is high in fibre

Seaweed is rich in fibre, which is important for the proper functioning of the stomach. The fibre in seaweed is also believed to promote the growth of new intestinal bacteria, which in turn stimulates the immune system. Fibre helps regulate blood sugar, lower cholesterol plus it keeps you fuller for longer, among other things.
